HOW TO SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 1, 1995

Abstracts of contributed papers must be received at MRS Headquarters no later than November 1, 1995, via one of the following procedures:

How to Submit an Abstract:

Click here to submit via the Web

Or, request a template and instructions for submitting your abstract via email from: S96@abstracts.mrs.org with the text "send form" somewhere in the body of your email message.

*Mail or Fax: You may mail or fax the abstract template inserted in the back of the 1996 Spring Meeting Call for Papers brochure. Follow the instructions carefully. Mail to: Abstract Enclosed, Materials Research Society, 9800 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237; Fax to: (412) 367-4373.

If you do not have a 1996 Spring Meeting Call for Papers brochure:

Abstracts of contributed papers (one original), plus an optional one or two pages of supporting materials, must be received at MRS Headquarters (use address listed above) no later than November 1, 1995. Be sure to indicate for which meeting the abstract is being submitted for consideration, the symposium title, and your full name and address to we may acknowledge receipt of your abstract.

TITLE OF PAPER - ALL CAPITAL LETTERS

This set of instructions is given in the style and format to be used by authors in preparing abstracts. Follow this example in preparing your abstract. Reproduction will be done by photographing the abstract copy exactly as received and reducing it in size by 33%. You may use special templates for this purpose obtainable from symposium organizers or MRS headquarters; or you may submit your abstract on white paper in a space no larger than 5 in. (12.7 cm) wide by 5 in.(12.7 cm) long. At the top of the page above the text, you must include the name of the meeting and symposium title; at the bottom, or on a separate page, list all authors (full name, complete mailing address, phone, fax and e-mail). Indicate which author will be presenting the paper.

Input Instructions

Type the title in capital letters, single spaced. Begin the text two lines below the last line of the title section. Single space the text with double-spacing between paragraphs.

Printing Guidelines

If you use a word processor computer, print using a letter-quality printer (e.g. Impact or laster printer - do not use a dot matrix printer), or use an electric typewriter with carbon ribbon.

Abstract Submission

Submit one camera-ready abstract to MRS Headquarters at the address listed above. Contributors must observe established deadlines to ensure being listed in the Program book should their paper(s) be accepted.

PROCEEDINGS

A number of symposia from this meeting will publish proceedings in the MRS Symposium Proceedings series. Camera-ready manuscripts for these proceedings will be refereed at the meeting. Further information will be provided after the abstract deadline.

EXHIBIT

An exhibit is scheduled for the MRS 1996 Spring Meeting in San Francisco with companies displaying analytical and processing equipment and publications closely paralleling the nature of the technical symposia. The exhibit will be convenient to the technical session rooms, and the program will be arranged to allow meeting participants ample time to visit the exhibit.

Companies interested in exhibiting should contact:

Mary E. Kaufold
Manager, Advertising and Exhibits
Materials Research Society
9800 McKnight Road
Pittsburgh, PA 15237 USA
Telephone (412) 367-3036
Fax (412) 367-4373

NEW! MRS TUTORIAL PROGRAM TO BE LAUNCHED AT
1996 SPRING MEETING

A new MRS Tutorial Program will begin with the 1996 Spring Meeting in San Francisco. Half-day sessions immediately preceding the first day of selected symposia will be highlighted under the symposium listings in the Program mailed in early February 1996.

Tutorials will concentrate on new, rapidly breaking areas of research and are designed to encourage the exchange of information by meeting attendees during the symposium.

There will be a modest charge for tutorial notes with no additional registration fee; however, meeting attendees interested in attending must preregister.

GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS

The Materials Research Society announces the availability of several awards for graduate students conducting research on a topic to be addressed in the symposia planned for the 1996 Spring Meeting. Each award will consist of a cash grant of $250, a plaque which will be presented at the Plenary Session during the meeting, and a waiver of the meeting registration fee.

Criteria for selection are:
(1) Graduate standing in a recognized academic program in materials science, metallurgy, ceramics, or polymers; physics or chemistry; geology or mineral science; electrical, civil, mechanical, mining, or nuclear engineering; or other materials-related field.
(2) Participation in the MRS 1996 Spring Meeting as an attendee and author or co-author of a symposium paper.
(3) Outstanding performance in the conduct of this project and promise for future substantial achievement in materials research as judged by the faculty advisor.
(4) Significant and timely research results.

Application materials required are:
(1) Application form obtained by writing or calling MRS Headquarters.
(2) Abstract of paper to be presented at the meeting.
(3) Letter of support from research supervisor.

Deadline for completed application is January 3, 1996. Finalists will be notified by February 21, 1996. Award winners will be announced at the 1996 Spring Meeting.

Obtain application from:
John B. Ballance, Executive Director, Materials Research Society, 9800 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237-6006, USA; Telephone (412) 367-3004, Fax (412) 367-4373

SYMPOSIUM AIDE OPPORTUNITIES

Graduate students who plan to attend the 1996 Spring Meeting and are willing to assist in the symposium presentations by operating audio-visual equipment are encouraged to apply for a Symposium Aide position. The student will receive a waiver of the student registration fee, complimentary membership, July 1, 1996, through June 30, 1997, and a small stipend toward expenses after assisting in four full half-day sessions. To request an application form and/or information, contact Jane Stokes at MRS Headquarters, (412) 367-3004, Ext. 302 * Fax (412) 367-4373, E-mail: stokes@mrs.org.

JOB PLACEMENT

A job placement service will be offered to MRS members and meeting attendees during the 1996 Spring Meeting of the Materials Research Society. The center will be located in the San Francisco Marriott Hotel (times and dates to be announced later). Individuals using the interviewing facilities at the MRS Spring Meeting must register for the meeting, as well as with the Job Placement Service. You need not attend, however, to have your résumé included on file.

San Francisco

San Francisco Regional Info
Bay Area Restaurant Guide

San Francisco is known as a crossroads to everywhere. If you plan on extending your stay in San Francisco before or after the meeting, you have numerous choices both in the city and nearby. In this convenient 46.6-square-mile peninsula, you will find cable cars to ride (one block from the San Francisco Marriott Hotel), the Cable Car Museum, Fisherman's Wharf, The Presidio (the original fortress was established by the Spanish in 1776), Old Fort Point (a Civil War fortress in the Presidio), Mission Dolores (the oldest structure in the city), Golden Gate Park, the Golden Gate Bridge with its pedestrian walk open daily, over 40 museums, including the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum (art), the Asian Art Museum, the California Academy of Sciences (natural science), and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Within easy driving distance are the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, the Monterey-Carmel Peninsula, Napa and Sonoma Valleys, Sacramento (California's Capitol), Point Reyes National Sea Shore and Muir Woods, mining towns of the Mother Lode, the Mendocino Coast, and Silicon Valley.

The temperature in San Francisco is noted for its year-round consistency - the sea acts as a thermostat. Daytime temperatures seldom rise above 750, with cooler evenings. If you plan to take time to explore San Francisco, take a pair of comfortable shoes and a raincoat for protection against rain or evening fog.
